If you hope to continue clinical medicine for long time and career-up in Australia, you need to obtain the general registration from AHPRA in majority of cases (while there is another specialist registration with which you can only practice in your speciality). To obtain it, you need to complete the standard pathway requirements such as passing AMC part1 and part2 and completing one year hospital rotation. In here, this article explains AMC part1 MCQ Exam. This exam consists of questions with one correct answer from five options. The total number of question is 150 and 120 questions are actually to be counted. The rest of 30 questions are just pilot questions. Time limit is 3.5 hours. Venues of this exam are held worldwide including Japan. Please see details in AMCwebsite.
I sat this exam in June 2011 for the first time and passed it. I had studied for roughly two months. Back then when I was in Mater Mothers' Hospital, I was told from an Indian colleague who already passed it, "You can pass it if you study twice of the AMC text book (Hand Book of Multiple Choice Questions)". However, I was more prudent than what he said and studied twice not only the AMC text book, but also an old AMC text book (Annotated Multiple Choice Questions). Then, I managed to pass it. This is my subjective impression though, it is not too daring to say that this AMC Part1 is not difficult given the fact that I passed it with this little extent of study. You can say with certainty that difficulty of AMC Part1 is much lesser than that of USMLE, a famous American version of exam for doctors hoping to practice clinical medicine in America. Having said that, in considering that need of overseas doctors in Australia nowadays has been getting lower, it is easy to imagine that the difficulty of AMC Part1 is now up and up. So be vigilant for any exam. It is wise to sit an important exam with enough study and well prepared tactics.
