オーストラリアのブリスベンに来て、予定通りＵＱのジャーナリズム修士過程に入学しました。ここで勉強することで本場の英語に慣れ、オーストラリアに渡ってから六か月目にOccupational English Test (ＯＥＴ) という英語試験に合格することが出来ました。この英語試験は、外国人医師がオーストラリアで医者として働くにあたって、必ず合格しておかなければならない試験です。また、ブリスベンに来てから、私は医者としての就職活動も開始していました。当時Mater Mothers' Hospital (MMH)の新生児部長だった先生にメールをしたところ、私の経歴に興味を持っていただき、運よく雇用の約束を取り付けてもらうことが出来ました。その後、かなりの紆余曲折があったのですが、オーストラリアに来てから一年と十か月後に、MMHのNICUでRegistrarとして、私のオーストラリアにおける臨床医としての経験がスタートしました。二年二か月の間、私はここの病院で過ごしました。ちなみに、ジャーナリズムの修士課程は、かなり苦労しましたが、約二年の歳月をへて卒業しました。MMHでの勤務の後は、ブリスベンの郊外にあるRedland Hospitalという公立病院に移動しました。ここでは、一般小児科で七か月間臨床を行い、その後、内科、整形外科、救急、精神科などの臨床ローテーションを行いました。合計、一年七か月をこの病院で過ごしました。そして現在は、General Practitioner (GP)と呼ばれる総合診療医の仕事を行っています。ＧＰは、赤ちゃんから老人まで、男性女性限らず、全ての疾患を診るかかりつけ医の役割です。このＧＰの仕事を、診療所で患者さんを診る場合と、患者さんの自宅に訪ずれて診察する訪問診療の両方を行っています。オーストラリアに来た当初は、ジャーナリズムの修士課程をまず卒業して、また医者として臨床を少し経験したら日本に帰ろうぐらいに考えていたのですが、その後路線が少し変わって、今もまだオーストラリアでの医者のキャリアの積み重ねを追及しているといったところです。

After arriving at Brisbane Australia, I enrolled into the master of journalism in UQ as planned. In this environment where native English is obviously the used language, I slowly absorbed it and managed to pass an English exam which is called Occupational English Test (OET). Passing an English test is an imperative prerequisite for all overseas doctors to practice medicine in Australia. Also, after arriving at Brisbane, I had started doctor's job hunting. When I sent an email to a then-director of Mater Mothers' Hospital (MMH) neonatal department, luckily I got very positive response to my prior neonatology career in Japan and a green-light to hire me from him. Although there were some big twists and turns after that, my clinical practice in Australia started as a registrar in the neonatal department of MMH when one year and ten months had elapsed since moved to Australia. I spent two yeas and two months in this hospital. By the way, despite great struggles, I managed to graduate from UQ's master of journalism in two years. After MMH, I moved to Redland Hospital in Brisbane. In here, I did seven months of general paediatrics and then rotated among internal medicine, orthopaedics, emergency medicine and mental health. I spent, in total,  one and seven months in this hospital. And then, I am working as a general practitioner (GP) now. GP sees everyone from baby to elderly, male and female, and every diseases as a home doctor. I am doing both clinic base GP and home visiting GP. When I first landed on Australia, I just thought that I would graduate from the master of journalism and experience a bit of clinical practice as a medical doctor, then go back to Japan. However, the course slightly shifted afterwards and I am still pursuing my career as a doctor in Australia.

私は東京の慈恵医大を卒業し、医者になりました。慈恵医大の附属病院にて研修を行い、小児科の道に進みました。小児科の中では、サブ・スペシャリティとして新生児医療に携わっていました。そのため、ＮＩＣＵと呼ばれる新生児集中治療室にて、ほとんどの時間を過ごしました。そして、医者十年目の年に当たる2009年に、留学の目的でオーストラリアに渡航しました。目的はThe University of Queensland（UQ）のジャーナリズムの修士課程に入るためでした。当時から私は、新生児医療にまつわる深甚な領域を、ジャーナリズムの力を借りて発信していきたいと考えていました。そのためにジャーナリズムを新たに学ぶことに、また日本にとどまらず外国で新しいことに挑戦することに胸が高鳴るのをおさえきれずにいました。なぜオーストラリアを選んだのかについては、UQのジャーナリズムの修士課程の印象が良かったからですが、それ以外の大きな理由として、オーストラリアは外国人の医者が臨床を行うことにオープンな国と認識していたので、ジャーナリズムの勉強をしている間に医者としてもここで働けるように入り込んでいければ、と思ったからでした。そして、私は妻と二人の子どもたちと共に、日本の住居を引き払い退路を断ってオーストラリアに渡りました。

I graduated from the Jikei university school of medicine in Tokyo and then became a medical doctor in Japan. I trained in hospitals of the university and chose to pursue the path to a paediatrician. My subspecialty in paediatrics is, baby, neonatology. Hence, I spent most of my time in, what we call, Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU). Then, at the tenth year of my career, I crossed the ocean to Australia for my overseas study. The first objective was to enrol into a master course of journalism in the University of Queensland (UQ). From that time, I have been considering discoursing realm of neonatology around which there are lots of profound stories by incorporating journalism power and expertise. To do this, I was very excited to learn journalism and challenge new things in an overseas country outside Japan. The reason I chose Australia was that largely my impression towards UQ's master course of journalism was good though, at the same time there was another big reason that was my recognition towards Australia where it was a relatively open country for overseas doctors to practice medicine. Therefore, I chose Australia with a hope that I could register into Australian medical practice as a doctor while I was studying journalism in UQ. After all, myself, my wife and my two kids, my family of four vacated and moved to Australia with no home in Japan to come back to.

My brief history

私は現在、オーストラリアのブリスベンという街で、医者をやっています。日本からオーストラリアに渡って来て6年がたちました。その間に、オーストラリアで医者として働くための英語試験にパスし、その後に二つの医学の試験にパスし、必修科目のローテーション研修を行い、ジェネラル・レジストレーションと呼ばれるオーストラリアにおけるフルの医師登録の資格を取得しました。その資格取得に伴って、オーストラリアの永住権も取得しました。

I am now working as a medical doctor in Brisbane Australia. 6-years has elapsed since we moved to Australia from Japan. During this time, I passed an English exam, passed two types of medical exams, experienced hospital rotation of core departments and obtained General Registration which is full registration as a doctor in Australia. With this qualification, I also have obtained the Permanent Residency visa of Australia.

ブログ始めました。このブログでは、日本人医師である私が、オーストラリアで働いている経験を紹介していきたいと思います。オーストラリアでの興味深い経験を紹介できればうれしいですし、将来オーストラリアで臨床をし、これを門戸として世界に羽ばたきたいと思っている日本人医師（外国人医師）の方々の参考になればと思います。

I have started this blog. I hope to tell my stories as a Japanese doctor working in Australia. It would be my pleasure to discourse interesting stories in Australia. Also I wish this blog would be the one to which doctors (not only Japanese, but also foreign?, International Medical Graduate (IMG)? Overseas? whatever) can refer, aiming to practice medicine in Australia and thrive into the world through it as an open door.
